How to paint a staircase banister without sanding

Ok so I wanted to paint our staircase banister but I did not want to sand it, not only is it messy but there are alot of grooves and details that would not be fun to sand. So after lots of research I came up with this process. I used what I had on hand and just crossed my fingers it would work......

Here is the banister before
First I used a primer that I had from another project.....
I used 2 thin coats of this

Then I used the same Behr latex paint that I used on all of our trim. Color- Snow White.
This step took 3 coats and after the second coat I was over this project lol

In between every coat I let it dry overnight

Then final step is 2 coats of this....This will seal everything and give it a nice glossy finish.

There it is....I will say that I am very pleased with the results however it was one of the most irritating projects Ive done. Mainly because of how many coats I had to do. But if you are patient you can save a ton of money by just painting your banister or any other wooden furniture you have.

  1. How has this held up? I'm not wanting to sand my banister and railings either but they need a coat of paint badly.
